The Governors Office of Economic Development, regional planning districts and statewide organizations like Dakota Resources are all working for the cause of economic development. Why, then, do we need local committees? Shouldn’t economic development be left in the hands of professionals?

The fact is that when community development succeeds in a community like ours, it is usually because of the work of a local economic development group. And while professional economic development officials on the state and county level are helpful in connecting programs with people, without the local component our community will simply not have the spark it needs to grow.

Aberdeen’s Best Honored at Community Champions Awards

Several community awards were handed out Tuesday, Feb. 10 at the Community Champions Awards Luncheon at the Best Western Ramkota in Aberdeen.

More than 200 people attended the event, which was hosted by the Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and sponsored with the Aberdeen Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The ViTality award, sponsored by the Chamber, is presented to the individual who is the ‘keeper’ of the regional vision, or the person who lives in the regional growth and ‘ViTality’ spirit every day. The ViTality awarded annually to recognize individuals in a 17-county area of northeastern South Dakota who display enthusiasm for regional development. The namesake, ViTality, is in memory of Aberdonian, Vi Stoia. Stoia was often called a ‘regional thinker’, and felt that new businesses in Redfield or community work in Leola was a … Read More »
