“Get the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats.” Jim Collins’ quote from Good to Great is now famous, and powerful in its simplicity and logic. Yet it is not easy to accomplish.

Dakota Resources (formerly South Dakota Rural Enterprise) operated out of my home office for many years with contract administrative support and a contracted credit officer. We started out with the Capital Investment Fund as our only product. We were purely a financial institution making capital available to development organizations in South Dakota. We have become so much more by being responsive to the needs of our market and being willing to take calculated risks to meet those needs. This is the final issue of the SD Rural Enterprise newsletter. The 2011 Annual Report will be a publication of Dakota Resources—and here’s why.

The image of SD Rural Enterprise was due for a facelift. An update of our marketing materials and website was included in the 2011 work plan. Before embarking on that project, we decided to take a look at the SD Rural Enterprise brand as it has evolved over the years. We gathered board members, staff and a variety of constituents together with Joe Henkin and the staff of Henkin Schultz Communication Arts for a branding session. We explored how SD Rural Enterprise is perceived. What do we do? What is our position in the development market?
