The yellowing of leaves sends the first signal. Then an almost frosty morning rolls around and you notice suddenly that the sun is taking its time getting up these days. There are fewer robins and you start hearing geese moving south, joined by the other birds of summer, and you know. The season has changed. One day, you’re looking at summer and the next, autumn has arrived.

Of course the change of season, like every other change we face in life, doesn’t really happen overnight. Major shifts of light and temperature and nature herself are going on, working in the background, following a steady course toward a new beginning. And change in community development happens exactly the same way.

It starts with an awareness that it is time for a change, that we can make things better for our economy, our neighborhoods and our people. We come together, looking not just for answers, but also for the questions that will help us better understand where we are today and where we want to be in ten, twenty, or thirty years from now. We talk, we listen, and we make a start, realizing that change doesn’t happen overnight. Just as the green of summer slowly fades into the glory of autumn leaves, meeting the challenges of community growth and development is an incremental process.

And just as every part of nature participates in the sweeping change that is autumn on the prairie, every part of our community needs to be active in our own changes. We need to look at the way we think about growth, about communication, about leadership and about the future. We need to realize that real change is roots deep, a fundamental shift in who we are as a community—and what we can be.

Change is as essential part of life, just as it is the mainspring that drives nature. We’re closer to those changes, here on the plains, than many people living elsewhere. Let’s use that understanding to inform the changes in our community and ourselves that will grow our economy and make our way of life even better.
