Look around the small community of Centerville and you’ll see a success story in the making.
According to Jared Hybertson, the community’s Economic Development Coordinator, much of the progress and innovation happening in Centerville was sparked by RuralX.
“Almost everything we’ve done in the past two years goes back to RuralX,” he says. “It’s an event that really re-energizes us and makes us think outside the box.”
Here are just a few of the things Centerville has been doing to improve and enhance their community:
After being encouraged by youth engagement stories at RuralX, the community is in the process of setting up a Youth Advisory Board that reports to the Centerville Development Corporation.

Armed with community feedback, business surveys, business planning assistance from the Centerville Development Corporation, and a desire for more dining options in Centerville, a core team of people in the community were able to identify, approach and encourage a local entrepreneur to open a restaurant in the town’s recently vacated cafe.
Maria Martinez had moved to Centerville with her husband Juan after he took a position at a local dairy operation, and a lot of people knew about her culinary talents and restaurant experience. Maria opened “Maria’s Restaurant” on September 28, 2017, to a packed house and rave reviews.

Sioux Falls Nonprofits Celebrate Grant Awards

Ten Sioux Falls area nonprofits were recent recipients of Community Innovation Grants (CIG) and South Dakota Fund (SDF) grants awarded through the South Dakota Community Foundation. The grant awards total $79,000.
The SDCF offers Community Innovation Grants through their partnership with the Bush Foundation. The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) received forty-three applications for its second round of 2017 Community Innovation Grants. Fourteen nonprofits were selected to receive awards. Six of those were either from the Sioux Falls area or offering services in Sioux Falls.
“The SDCF is pleased to partner with these Southeast area nonprofits as they work to address community needs,” says Ginger Niemann, SDCF program officer. “We look forward to working with them as they meet the challenges they identified.”
