South Dakota Grants in Place is a cooperative venture between the Rural Schools Collaborative and Dakota Resources. Grants in Place provides a modest grant to rural teachers so they can engage with their students and community in place-based learning.

The Grants in Place program was implemented in South Dakota by Dakota Resources to connect rural teachers and students to their community through local projects. “Building the connections between rural schools and communities will help us ‘Get Better Together’”, says Mike Knutson, Dakota Resources Learning Network Director.

Jim Beddow, former President of Dakota Wesleyan University and Board Chair for the Rural Schools Collaborative states, “We believe that place-based education gives meaning to learning, strengthens the bonds between school and community, and instills pride in the cultures and histories of rural places and small towns.”

The 2018-19 program will fund five rural place-based learning projects … Read More »

STUDENTS PROMOTE THEIR HOMETOWN FROM NEW HEIGHTS

Story by Rural Schools Collaborative

In Kimball, South Dakota, students are helping their small town soar, thanks to a Rural Schools Collaborative Grants in Place project called “Growing Better Together,” which is funded by our partner, Dakota Resources with matching funds from individual donors and the Rural Schools Collaborative.

At Kimball School, computer science teacher Drew Gillogly is working with his multimedia classes to make a video featuring the town and highlighting its many assets. The project, called Sharing Kimball Awareness, partners students with the Kimball Economic Development group. This year, they’ve been working together on a unique project promoting the town of 703, while learning about new tools and technology they can carry with them into their careers.

Mr. Gillogly’s classes, along with local economic development coordinator, Anita Holan, are currently working on the production of community marketing videos. The videos are … Read More »

Reposted from http://ruralschoolscollaborative.org

We love to hear about the progress of our Grants in Place across the country – and this fall we are getting some fantastic stories from the Dakotas, where RSC and Dakota Resources have partnered in the “Growing Better Together” Grants in Place program.

In McIntosh, South Dakota, LaKisha Jordan, family and consumer science teacher at McIntosh High School, has led a student-centered effort in her classroom that promotes local foods and how to prepare them in a healthy, delicious and nutritious manner.

She and her students have titled the initiative, Unboxed! which aims to encourage and educate students and families about the benefits of local food sources. The program is summarized on the home page of the website (shown at right):
