Platte brings youth and community together.

Blog, News & Events on December 1st. Comments Off on Platte brings youth and community together.

If you want to see what a little creativity, youth involvement and community-building can do for a rural town, Platte is an excellent case study. The community is alive with ideas and plans for the future, and Cindy Meyer, Executive Director of the Platte Area Chamber of Commerce, gives a healthy dose of credit to Rural X.

“We were inspired to connect our youth and our business community at Rural X, and so many other ideas we had were made better after we attended,” explains Cindy. “My only complaint about Rural X is that isn’t held twice a year!”

Since attending RuralX17 last July, the community of Platte has formed five different Community Action Teams to help improve and enhance the quality of life in the Platte area. Teams are designated for events, youth, green space, housing and The Arts. Each team … Read More »

Students are building bridges while getting creative in their school MakerSpace

Eureka, SD — October 2017

The Rural Schools Collaborative and Dakota Resources are proud to collaborate on the Growing Better Together grant program, which is a part of RSC’s national “Grants in Place” initiative. The two organizations awarded Kaci Vander Vorst, Computer Studies teacher at Eureka School District, a $1,000 grant award for a student-led multimedia project promoting the Eureka School District and community.

Ms. Vander Vorst’s students collaborated with Eureka Community Development to use multimedia, audio, and visual broadcasting to develop messaging that highlights the assets of both the community and the school district itself.

The grant award was presented by South Dakotans Jim Beddow and Mike Knutson. Beddow, of Sioux Falls, serves as board chair for … Read More »

Good Ideas Are Popping Up All Over Miller

Blog, News & Events on October 17th. Comments Off on Good Ideas Are Popping Up All Over Miller

Thanks to a group of creative high school students and dedicated community leadership, life just keeps getting better in Miller.

In 2016, two Miller students left RuralX with a vision for pop-up shops for Christmas. That inspiration launched the town’s first Cozy Cabin Christmas, which was met with success.

This year, the holiday pop-up shops will continue in a new venue while students set their sights on their next post-RuralX project: an indoor pop-up movie theater!

“I met with the kids in September to toss out new ideas,” explains Tammy Caffee, Director of On Hand Development and the student supervisor. “They had a list of ideas they heard at RuralX that they wanted to try. They voted and chose three to work on. One was a living wall. Another was to create a green space on Main Street with tables and umbrellas. … Read More »

What was Your Rural Xperience?

Blog, News & Events on July 27th. Comments Off on What was Your Rural Xperience?

Below are quotes captured from the participants of RuralX17:

“There is great power in our rural connections. I don’t take for granted the awesome resources available to rural communities in our state, but it takes some digging to know where to find them. That’s why an event like RuralX is so valuable. Just last night I needed help with a grant project and Beth Davis got out her phone, pushed a few buttons and this morning I got a call from someone willing to help me. That’s powerful. That is the beauty of a rural connection.” – Emily Firman Pieper, Flandreau Community Advocate

“We were doing research on rural development or rural resources on Google and we stumbled across RuralX17. There was so much good talk and so many great ideas! Now we are ready to go back home and turn the talk … Read More »
