“The Rural Gives Challenge was a great way for rural economic development organizations to get involved with the Day of Giving. I appreciated the thoughtful planning your team did to help us prepare for the big day and the Eventbrite emails that kept us on track!”

This was just one of the comments we heard about the Dakota Resources Rural Gives Challenge from a participating community. Rather than raising money to help fund rural projects through Dakota Resources, we decided to help our EDOs raise money and awareness for themselves. Throughout the day, Dakota Resources challenged economic development directors to post about projects, people and goals that are helping shape their communities.

A total of ten communities were involved in the Rural Gives Challenge, with entries that encouraged and inspired us. We drew winners from each challenge at random, with $500 going to the following:

Challenge #1: Post about a project in your community

Winner: Burke Business Promotion Corporation

“The #BBPC is proud to have contributed to the recently completed Gregory County Meat Locker project. This was a project years in the making, and all the right pieces finally came together! An important ag business in Gregory County.” A link to this story can be found here.

Challenge #2: Share some love for someone in your community

Winner: Estelline Development Corp

“One of our favorite volunteers in Estelline is Donna Thompson. She is always available to help out where needed. She is on the Estelline Volunteer Ambulance Service, the Estelline Rodeo Committee and she helps with the church and school. She has also been a previous EAEDC board member. We want to thank her for everything she does in our community.”

Challenge #3: Post about your goals for 2020

Winner: Wall Economic Development

Wall Economic Development Director Liliya Stone provided a video outlining goals for the community in 2020, which include a designated industrial park.  Click here to view the video.

We also awarded four economic development organizations who were participating in South Dakota’s Day of Giving with $50 to help with their fundraising efforts:

  • Webster Area Development Corporation
  • Kimball Economic Development Corporation
  • Deuel Area Development, Inc.
  • Glacial Lakes Area Development

“#GivingTuesday was an opportunity to give thanks to Dakota Resources for helping and mentoring us, for giving us access to tools and providing resources. And especially for today, for challenging us and giving us this opportunity to tell our story and thank those who support and believe in our organization. A big shout-out to you guys for all the hard work you do, helping all of us, so we can help our community. You are changemakers!” wrote Liliya.

Thanks to all of you who are out there making a difference. We’ll be back again next year with something even bigger and better for the South Dakota Day of Giving!
